TRACING ISTANBUL THROUGH THE LENS OF ARA GULER

By Ela Amber Eren

This project examines the spatial concentration of the photographs featured in
The book ‘Ara Güler’s Istanbul’ analyzes how they manifest on the urban map.
It investigates the specific locales where Güler visualizes his Istanbul,
identifying the neighborhoods, streets, urban motifs, and landscapes that are
Repeatedly prioritized within his work. The objective is to utilize the map, not
merely as a representational tool for localization, but as an analytical instrument
to decipher the overarching narrative that the photographs construct about the city’s
identity.

Yeşilçam and İstanbul

By Ezgi Topal

This project aims to document the filming locations used by Yeşilçam cinema and to make visible the place of these locations in urban, social, and cultural memory. Yeşilçam films are not only visual records of cinema history but also of Istanbul’s social structure, class divisions, and modernization process. In this context, the project considers cinema not only as a narrative tool but also as a memory space documenting the transformation of the city.

WATERFRONT HERITAGE – BOSPHORUS YALIS

By Shahbano Khan

THE CORE CONCEPT OF THE PROJECT IS TO SHED LIGHT ON THE PRIVATISATION AND COMMERCIALISATION OF THE HISTORICAL WATERFRONT YALIS ON THE EUROPEAN SIDE OF ISTANBUL, SPECIFICALLY ALONG THE SARIYER STRAIT.

THE PROJECT COVERS 7 LANDMARKS: COMMENCING FROM RUMELIHISARI ALL THE WAY TO TARABYA.

THIS PROJECT REVEALS HOW PRIVATISATION RESTRICTS PUBLIC ACCESS TO SARIYER’S WATERFRONTS, PRESERVING THEM IN HISTORICAL FORM WHILE DENYING THE PUBLIC THE LIVED EXPERIENCES NECESSARY TO TRANSFORM THESE SITES FROM MERE SPACES INTO PLACES OF SHARED VALUE AND MEANING.

A TALEOF TWO NİŞANTAŞI(S)

By NİL BAŞOL – GÜLTEN ECE ERDÖNMEZ

This project explores how the same urban space can be experienced and produced differently by individuals from different socio-cultural backgrounds.
Focusing on Nişantaşı, the project compares two characters from Orhan Pamuk’s novels Masumiyet Müzesi (Kemal) and Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık (Mevlüt). Using Henri Lefebvre’s concept of The Production of Space, the project examines how space is not only designed and planned, but also shaped through memory, daily routines, walking, and emotional experience.
